Literature Studies

A Small Anthology of Poems - Wide variety of poems that are annotated and/or introduced with commentary and author biographical information. Maintained by the English department of the Western Michigan University

Access: The Great Books - A compilation of classic authors and their works, along with biographies, background and study guides. Linked to other sites related to the study of literature. Maintained by the Access Foundation; an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational research foundation.

Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts - Collection of public domain documents from American and English literature as well as Western philosophy. Maintained by Infomotions a company providing consulting, teaching, and computer programming services to libraries, librarians, and other library organizations providing services to libraries.

American Verse Project - a collaborative project between the University of Michigan Humanities Text Initiative (HTI) and the University of Michigan Press.

Anthology of Poetry - Contains about 650 poems by 117 great poets.

Banned Books Online - Special collection of books that have been the objects of censorship or censorship attempts.

Bartleby.com - Reference works and classic literature. Does not say that it is non-profit; however, the online books are free and the ‘store’ where you can order the print books is nicely separated.

Classic Book Library - A collection of online ebooks featuring mystery, science fiction and romance.

Classic Reader - A collection of over 3000 classic stories (including nearly 2000 short stories). Published & maintained by Blackdog Media, a one-person company run by Stephane Theroux, in British Columbia, Canada. Beware the pop-ups.

Classical Authors Directory - Portraits, biographies and pictures of 460 classic authors. 1258 online books of classical literature enhanced with annotations from the Encyclopedia of the Self. This site is not user friendly, it is hard to get to the literature, but somewhat made-up for by its biographical information and annotations.

ClassicAuthors.net - Includes archives of now public-domain works by various well-known American and British authors. This site does not seem to have been updated since 2005. Do check it out though if you like the classics, they have additional links under each author to sites devoted to that author—something I hope to see here soon.

eserver.org: accessable writing - Includes a variety of literature-related materials, including etext archives of prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction; links. Maintained at Iowa State University.

Learn Library - Offers books, poems, speeches, plays and essays; includes reader discussion forums. Learn Library and Literature Project seem to be closely related.

Literature Project - A collection of classic books, poems, speeches, and plays. Site offers online chapter-indexed hypertext that can be easily read and searched and each piece includes downloadable e-text of the work. Learn Library and Literature Project seem to be closely related.

Literature.org: The Online Literature Library - A small selection of online etexts from English literature. As far as I can tell nothing you won’t find elsewhere.

Luminarium - Anthology of Middle English Literature 1350

Medieval and Classical Library – A collection of literary works of classical and medieval civilization. Not a big collection, but simple and easy to use, also has an interesting genre page.

PSU's Electronic Classics Series - Classics of literature in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. Pennsylvania State University.

The Classics in ASCII - Public domain fiction and non-fiction etexts at Textfiles.com.

The Palimpsest Review - The student literary magazine of The Pennsylvania State University
